The Baganda of central Uganda have a rich culture going back through history. The traditional mat (mukeeka) features prominently. Made by weaving palm leaves into intricate patterns, the mat is still used in rural homes and in traditional ceremonies as a tool for sitting on. A young Muganda (person belonging to the Baganda) bride still receives several mats in her trousseau as a reminder that her new home must be welcoming to visitors! In urban homes the mat is an important interior décor item.
