Imagine a group of women chatting and laughing as each creates a basket with beautiful and intricate patterns bursting with colour. To these women basket making is more than a means of making a livelihood. It is a chance to socialise, exchange information about children, or the joys and challenges of life. The bonds made in the group become the foundation for friendships and social support networks.
These handmade baskets from Uganda are made by local women from raffia. They are known traditionally as ‘Ntemere’ or “ebibbo”. These baskets are multi-purpose and can be used as wall decorations, fruit baskets, trays, gift hampers, or for storing knick-knacks like electrical gadgets, keys, jewellery.
